WELLS CATHEDRAL SCHOOL

Cedars Hall, the new music facility at Wells Cathedral School, was purpose-built to support the teaching, learning, and performance of music at the highest level. Designed with both functionality and sensitivity to its historic surroundings, the building responds to the unique acoustic and architectural demands of a modern performance space. Acoustic requirements were central to the design, dictating the volume and proportions of the recital hall to ensure optimal sound quality for both performers and audiences.

To preserve the integrity of the listed landscape and maintain uninterrupted views of the iconic cathedral, the design employed a clever sectional strategy. The performance space was partially buried into the ground, reducing its visual impact, while a set-back clerestory at roof level allowed natural light to enter without compromising the skyline.

Cedars Hall stands as a testament to thoughtful engineering and design, where modern performance needs are met without overshadowing the heritage of its surroundings. It reflects Paramount’s commitment to delivering intelligent, site-responsive structures that enhance both function and form.
