The LD-44 is a bespoke, purpose-built salt storage facility that combines functionality with aesthetics to provide a pleasing yet practical structure for long-term usage. Salt is a very corrosive material; hence, no steel was allowed in the salt barn. The brief from the client was therefore to use timber and also to create a simple dome with clean lines and striking visuals.
Also, dimensional challenge: minimum height of 16 m in the middle to allow the plant to operate on a 12 m pile height without potentially damaging the roof structure.
Structurally, the domes use softwood timber and birch ply to form trapezoidal panels containing a lattice of solid timber studs and beams with a glued ply outer skin, which are faceted in layers. These panels are connected using bolts to form a rigid frame that is capable of resisting lateral loads using the diaphragm action from the ply membrane.
